Miscreants vandalise 100-year-old temple, break idols in Karimganj

SILCHAR: A gang of unidentified miscreants vandalised a century-old temple and demolished some idols in Raipur under the Ramkrishnanagar police station area in Assam’s Karimganj district on Sunday.
The matter came to light on Monday morning after a few local residents spotted the damages done to the temple. The news spread like a wildfire following which a large number of people descended on the site.
The police were informed about the matter and a team led by DSP (Karimganj) went to the area and conducted a preliminary investigation.Police said the matter was being probed and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
Lalcherra GP president Sanjay Kumar Goswami urged the locals to maintain peace and harmony and to not indulge in violence or rumour mongering regarding the issue. A source said tension had gripped the area following the incident. Police are keeping a close watch to maintain the law and order in the area, the source said.
Citizens of Raipur have demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and stern action against those behind the incident. Last month, an 18th century temple was burnt by miscreants in Barman Basti, Ratabari in Karimganj.
